  • FTU POTD Wednesday 10th December 2008

Bear (aka Kenton) has nominated a topical picture for today's FTU Picture of the Day, bycapetrekkers:

Kenton says: "This appeals to me because it tells a story about the decline of small scale fishing and because the bright foreground and the menacing sky offer a glimpse of the conflict between the optimism and danger that go hand in hand in the industry."

Although the picture is of Newfoundland boats, they are topical here in the UK as an example of what could be the result of a new government initiative to pay inshore fishing boat owners to quit the industry as part of a solution to address over-fishing.

Thanks Kenton and well done capetrekkers!

Thank you for choosing my picture as the POTD.

We spent six weeks in Newfoundland and Labrador last Spring and we saw this scene played out many times throughout the Province. Abandoned fishing vessels are also becoming much too commonplace in New England as well. This industry is indeed in decline worldwide.

    Regards
    David
