  • FTU POTD Monday 1st December 2008

Here is our very first Four Thirds User Picture of the Day, nominated by Bear:

    This picture is by ndl0071.

    Bear explains:

"Given the season this picture speaks to me about the sadness of decay and the passing of brighter days. The B&W conversion adds the sense of loneliness & depression that sometimes affects me on the dark and miserable days!"

Oh dear! I hope that is a positive comment, overall

The picture almost appears to have been spray-painted in gold, ready for a Christmas decoration...

In fact the image was created for the current FTU Salon contest, themed 'Out of Date'.

The comment was intended to be positive and I hope it is taken as such. I am not one given to depression or even much of an odd bout of miserableness but when the glorious colours of autumn turn to decay and the cold days and long nights arrive it affects even me.

What I found so positive about this image is the ability it has to evoke such strong emotion. I believe that the photographer's primary work when composing an image is to consider how to involve the viewer. The photographer that produces an image capable of evoking powerful emotions has succeeded and the image deserves to be POTD.

    A very well done to ndl00071 !

Re: FTU POTD Monday 1st December 2008

        Hi Guys

Just looked in as its lunch time, and wow what a pleasant surprise..A real honour to be nominated.

Thanks Bear, I really do appreciate the nomination that enabled this image to be seen (and I hope appreciated) by more viewers.

I was very pleased with the way the image turned out; it was taken with the E510 coupled with the 50-200 SWD taken at 200mm at f3.5 hence the wicked dof. As you can clearly see the image is full of detail which is a great testament to this lens.

I think that the brown/gold toning adds a mood of drama, decay and hopelessness’ to the image; I believe these are the emotions that Bear picked up on.

Thanks Ian and Smoke for the following comments (above).

Here’s to a great new feature on the forum

          Congrats Neil!

It's definitely the day of the E-510 - the POTD on the e-group today was also taken using one:

A really great "Monochrome" effect. No surprise in it being nominated and chosen.

I like it but it lacks sharpness and details.

Mmmm, really? Even though it has been resized for the Web, I can see spider silk strands.

I think there is plenty of detail, but any perceived lack of sharpness may be down to the resizing.

I don't think it lacks either sharpness or detail. But then again I am biased - it is one of my favouraite recently posted images here !
