  • Photo challenge - bokeh!

To kick off a new Photo Challenge board here on the FTU forum, I thought it would be fun to show some of our friends of a different camera system disposition that Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds can do things quite nicely that the nay-sayers said couldn't. So, to start with - blurring the background; bokeh and all that.

    Here is my contribution:

This rather splendid cockerel was running around with a harem of rather dowdy hens on an a small tropical island in provincial Leyte, the Philippines, when I was there in September 2010.

I was using the, then, brand new Olympus E-5 (only handed to me during Photokina a couple of days beforehand) with a Digital Zuiko 50-200 SWD.

    ISO: 640
    Focal length: 200mm
    Aperture: f/5.6
    Shutter speed: 1/320th
    Hand-held: Yes
    Conditions at the time: overcast
    Processed: Lightroom 4.1 (from RAW)

I'm sure you can do better Post your shot in this thread and let's see how well FT and MFT cameras can combine beautifully blurred backgrounds and pin-sharp foregrounds!

I just went through files that I had never processed before (discarded shots) - decided on one from each using my 50mm f2, 70-300, and 50-200SWD. This time I have not cropped or processed as I normal would - just straight out of camera and resized for web.

                  Olympus E-3 w/ 50mm f2 : f2 @ 1/50'th : 2000 ISO

                  Olympus E-510 w/ 70-300mm @ 300mm : f8 @ 1/125'th : 800 ISO

                  Olympus E-3 w/ 50-200mm @104mm : f4.5 @ 1/250'th : 400 ISO

From one of my cooking sessions...

                    E1 + Samyang 85 ; ISO 200, 1/250

(the exif data records 180mm f2.8 because that was the configuration of the Af confirm adapter; my Samyang is native Nikon mount)

I think I read somewhere that in Victorian times photographers using big plate cameras were totally fed up with the paper thin depth of field they sometimes had to put up with and even formed an association that aimed to find a solution to the problem.
