  • E-3 Adobe Camera RAW/Lightroom Profile for Natural, Muted, Vivid, Portrait

...don't exist for Olympus DSLRs by default (all Canon and Nikon cameras have the in-camera profiles modelled in ACR), so I thought I'd make some using the DNG profile editor (Thanks to Tim Lees for the idea) and using a colorchecker chart to compare the standard output of ACR vs the various outputs of Olympus Master. This also means you get JPEG files a lot nearer to what would come out of the camera if you shot JPEG rather than RAW. All profiles are based on Normal Key, High Key and Low Key gradation (separate Profiles).

    Instructions:

Download the zip file: http://www.load.to/FAaZVsmRoz/Olympus_E-3.zip (Delete all previous files you may have downloaded from here)

Unpack the zip file (you will have a directory called Olympus E-3 with 12 files in it). Move the directory and the files to:

    On Mac OS X:

    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles

    On Windows 2000 / XP:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

    On Windows Vista:

    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

In ACR and Lightroom, look at the camera calibration profile dropdown - normally it defaults to 'Adobe Standard' - now you can choose:

    1. Camera Natural
    2. Camera Muted
    3. Camera Vivid
    4. Camera Portrait

... with 3 versions of each (Normal, Low Key and High Key)

Let me know if you notice any hideous discrepancies with Oly Master and I will attempt to fix them.

    Andy

Thanks for those Andy. I will download and try them out (when I get chance!)

I working on some improvements to get the accuracy better, but it will take a little time - the ones enclosed work quite well, though.

This task involves screen grabbing the DNG profile editor and comparing the grab in photoshop with the output of Oly Master using the eyedropper tool. Very time consuming, but it won't just be 'by eye'!

        New Profiles!

Including Normal, Low and High key versions - delete any previous files before downloading from the first page in the thread.

At a brief glance they seem to work well - thanks Andy! I presume they look at the exif to check for camera model, as they only show up on E-3 files, not E-520, which I think uses the same chipset. (memo to self: try renaming them!)
BTW they work on DNG files as well as ORF.

Thanks for checking them - I don't think renaming them will work... However, it should be possible to do the same for the 520. If you look at: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Olym...are=oly_e520/0 - you will see that the E-3 and the E-520 have different colour rendition, so I don't think applying the same recipe to a E-520 DNG will help.

Have you had a look at the normal/high/low key versions? - I cheated a bit by using a global tone curve on top of the normal key version to either change the upper half of the tone range (high key) or the lower end (low key) and then fiddled with the channel matrices to get the saturation right.

I think the normal key versions match the Oly Master/In-camera-JPEG quite well, the high and low key versions are okay, but not quite as spot on.

Well, I don't know about how exactly they match Oly Master displays, but they do seem very similar (I've never taken Jpegs on either camera), and most importantly they are very pleasing. Yes, I've looked at all versions (except portrait - I have no people shots!) and there is certainly the intended effect. Certainly a useful timesaver and good starting point for fine tuning.

                  Hi Andy,
I gave a try to your profiles but I must admit, there is something wrong with your profiles

Here is my proof of Vivid profile. The reds are very off...

Thanks for checking them out - is this the normal, low key or high key vivid?

                    Thanks

Edit: I can see it is normal - the reds were the biggest problem, I'm working on it now!

Here's a hopefully fixed natural, normal graduation:

I'll look at the others tomorrow!

Here's v2 - they're better with the reds, but not 100% there yet. Better than the Adobe standard, anyway:

at the moment I have no time to test. I just bought Mac and found Apple Aperture to be my preferred RAW convertor for a while (both colour and workflow)
