  • Need your input, people.

Hello everyone. I've noticed a pattern in a lot of images uploaded to the gallery. First, I'm jealous that I didn't get that shot. Pay no attention to the fact that I am in Florida in the U.S. and the shot was taken in Morocco. But it's always, "Damn, that great. Why didn't I take that shot?"

Then, it's "Well, if I DID shoot that, I woulda done THIS or THAT to it, THAT woulda made it better". Of course, it's great just the way it is, but each of us have our own take on what makes a picture good. Which brings me to something I think might be great fun.

I'm announcing the Brian Jackson (my real name, by the way) Galactic Award of Photographic Excellence in Post Processing and/or Image Manipulation. Here's how it will work. I will soon post to a downloadable site an image of my choosing, most likely a mediocre image of my own. I have hundreds to choose from, so this might take awhile. Each contestant has permission to do the full monty on it, no holds barred. Crop, color, use of third party filters, addition of other components from other images, you name it. Tame or outrageous, do your worst, I can take it. I will be the exclusive judge of what image tickles my fancy (or any other part) at the end of the allotted time. I will actually send you the Award Plaque if you win, no matter where you are in the Galaxy (Earth, most probably). We're sparing no expense here.

Of course, I may be smitten by this attempt at fun but the rest of you may think I've slid off the edge. That's where you're input is needed. If you think this would be a great diversion from the holidays ( I mean, how many times are we going to do the Christmas thing, seriously) or any other mundane part of your life, or your life is so vibrant and full that you simply couldn't add another thing to it (yeah, right) let me know either way so I can decide to move forward or make another appointment with my therapist.

This is very interesting and intriguing. I would like to suggest one thing though. To avoid any "sideway" influences between members, the PP-ed versions of your original image should be unveiled at the same time. So, maybe we should send them to your email and you would do the unveiling of all entries at the same time?

Sure, why not? I'm making this up as I go along anyway. I like that idea.

Alright! Why don't you throw one img at us to test your idea. Short deadline, say, till Monday?

No, no, not enough input yet. No practice runs. If/when we do this it'll be for the Award, not before. And sufficient time will be allowed to think it through, not like I do it.

OK, but from experience in PP, the idea that comes first to mind is usually the best, no matter how much more time I spend in PP

I'm champing at the bit, but I can hold the reins for a while.

We already do this on DPNow - it's called the Photo Fix Challenge. Here is a link to the previous one we did. It's about time I set a new one too!

                    Re: Need your input, people.

I think click-click's point is extremely valid; glad you are adopting it.

                    Two suggestions from me -

                    1. we can submit 2 images rather than 1 - reasons are that I enables more feedback on what you like, or dislike, whilst probably enabling significant re-use of pp lements.
                    2. whilst I welcome the obvious freedom you imply with the inclusion of elements from outwith you file this hugely complicates everything ie what proportion of the image elements need to be yours, at what size etc when is it your image augmented or another image completely - but with elements of yours! I would suggest that whilst the image elements could be moved around, scaled, tone mapped and tinted etc etc etc - the addition of external elements isn't one of the options.

Another looking forward to it all - especially as we are all snowed in in the UK!

                      Re: Need your input, people.

OK, after several hours (ok, a few minutes) of translating British into 'Merican (don't you people speak English?) I can now fine tune the rules, as most of you in the U.K. don't have a life for the moment due to weather and the response was encouraging for just a few hours.

I'll take photo owls recommendation and allow any number of entries from the same contestant. I know I have tweaked something after several days, and I will allow you to do the same. Tweak is an understatement. Anything goes.

As for the addition of outside elements, I'm leaving that in, with the caveat that the majority of the image elements need to come from the original image. This is NOT who can make the best save from a poor image, but who can make the most INTERESTING image from a random file. I don't care if there is little resemblance to the original file, as long as the elements present in the original are for the most part still there when you are done. If it's a photo of the Sarasota Hilton, it better be there in the end even if it's in an alien landscape.

Remember that I will be looking for the most interesting image (to me), not necessarily the most complex one. If I like it, it will win. Period. There will the the award winner, the 'ooh, you were THIS close' runner up, and the Nice Try award. Only the Award Winner will receive the plaque.

The contest will start 3 December and run for 14 days. I will post a link to pick up the common image tomorrow. When you are finished, email your entry/entires to me at

                      brianjackson3@mac.com

This is the most important part, taught to me by my T'ai Chi master my very first day in class.

Don't take yourself too seriously. Have fun.

                        Re: Need your input, people.

OK, all of you PP experts. Go to:

                        http://gallery.me.com/brianjackson3#100223

You will be able to download the image there as an approx. 10 meg file. Remember, you can add to, subtract from, paint to a new canvas, saturate, desaturate, yada, yada,...
This was never a RAW image, so I apologize for that. It's just the one that I came across that I could see me doing all sorts of things with. We're having fun after all. I personally can't wait to see these.
