  • Site modernisation - expect some disruption

Four Thirds User is already undergoing some under-the-skin modernisation and this work will soon start to be visible.

    We're going to:

    1. Replace the magazine section with a completely new content management system that is up to date and 'responsive' - in other words it will sense when you're viewing with a smartphone or tablet and adjust itself accordingly. You will also have a better comments system and the ability to share articles much more conveniently with your favourite social media channels.

    2. Update the forum to a more modern and secure generation, with features like auto-save when entering posts and, once again, better social media connectivity.

    3. Replace the photo gallery system. Our current system is undeniably old and not the best for ease of use. Unfortunately, its developers are now out of business so we have to switch to a new system.

    4. Update and promote our Four Thirds User "Knowledge" Wiki so you can join in and create content on the site yourself.

However, all of this will mean possibly frequent disruption to the site. Please don't panic!

If we need to we will post updates on work in progress, especially if there is a serious level of down time, at our company Twitter feed:

    https://twitter.com/write_tech

    Thank you for your understanding.

If you have any questions, I will only be too pleased to answer them!

I hope both will return - the Thank You button should as it's supported for this version of the forum but not yet sure about the Like button. There will be a fully functional Facebook Like button (which stopped working on the old forum a long time ago).

Thanks is now working but the button is currently on the left hand side of the screen under the post you want to thank. Making things pretty and formatting comes later

I don't seem to be able to stay signed in with Firefox on Android.

But I have managed to get back into the forums with Chrome after logging out and back in. I won't be changing to mobile style again.

Just stay with Chrome. I prefer it on pc & ipad & it remains consistent for me. My only gripe with it is saving favourites, I can't copy & paste it onto my desktop as a shortcut. I copy the link & open IE (pc), save as favourite & then that can be copied to then save it as a shortcut on my desktop. It's a pain but one way around it.

When you say you can't stay signed in, is it that you get logged out after a certain period? That could be a forum setting. Let me check.

              Ian

PS Probably too obvious but are you checking the 'Remember me' box when logging in? It might also be a cookie problem.

Yes I am checking the 'Remember me' box. Each time I close Firefox it appears to sign me out. It could be the cookie plug in I'm using in Firefox but it doesn't happen with the E-group.uk.net site.

At least Chrome remembers me (or allows the FTU cookies to).

Just a stab in the dark but I have changed the way the cookies are configured - probably means you need to log out and back in.

OK, he says scratching his head. I have focused on desktop browser and had IE, FF, Opera, Chrome and Edge all running yesterday and had no issues. I will try again with Safari on the iPad and the various browsers on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 tomorrow.
