  • Forum Meet - Thaxted Morris Dancing

    Saturday 31st May

The Thaxted Morris Weekend is one of the biggest annual events in the national Morris Dancing Calendar and is guaranteed to provide lots of colourful characters and spectacular dancing to photograph, with 15 “sides” from all over the country attending.

The main activity takes place from 6.00pm on Saturday evening, when Town Street in Thaxted is closed to traffic and all 15 sides dance simultaneously. The finale is at approximately 10.15pm, when the local Thaxted side perform the eerie and evocative Abbots Bromley Horn Dance.

Some of you may wish to come just for the evening, but I would recommend arriving no later than 5.00pm and preferably earlier as parking can be a problem and the street becomes very crowded with spectators.

However, for those who would like to make a day of it I recommend that we meet for brunch (or just a coffee if you prefer) at Parrishes Bar in Town Street (the main street running through Thaxted). We can then spend a couple of hours photographing the many old buildings and impressive church before watching four of the Morris sides perform outside the Guildhall at 2.45pm.

During the day the various Morris sides are split into 4 groups, which tour and perform at many of the surrounding villages. It is of course possible to drive out to some of these events and I have reproduced the leaflet with full details below.

After the dancing at the Guildhall we can visit the local windmill, which also has a small rural life museum. There are also some picnic tables where we could eat either sandwiches we have brought with us or purchased from the local shops. There are pubs, cafes and a fish & chip shop but these are likely to be very busy by late afternoon (another good reason for enjoying a hearty brunch at Parrishes in the morning).

We need to be prepared for the 6.00pm start, when all 15 Morris sides march in a procession to Town Street for the start of the evening’s dancing. It does become very crowded with spectators and unless you manage to secure a position at the front getting a clear view can be a problem. Also it might be difficult for us to stick together as a group.

As the evening wears on light levels drop and photography can be a real challenge, with the high ISO capabilities of your camera fully tested. Fast primes, if you have any, will give you a real advantage.

If you would like to join me at this unique event please register your interest below.

It sounds like an interesting, although slightly tiring event. A bit far for me!

You don't have to join in the dancing!

If you leave now you should just about get here in time.
