  • Hatfield Forest Meet 2014

Hatfield Forest is well worth a visit at any time of year but is particularly spectacular towards the end of May when thousands, if not billions of buttercups flower in the open meadows with a riot of eye-popping yellow. We did this as a group meet several years ago and it's high time we repeated it. I am running this in conjunction with the Olympus E-System Use Group but you do not need an Olympus camera to attend!

The date is Sunday 25th May and I suggest we meet in the car park at the main entrance at 9.00am. Please note that there is a parking charge of 5.00, but free to National Trust members. You can of course arrive later if you wish and we can make arrangements to meet you.

Facilities include toilets and a cafe, which is handy for a coffee break and/or lunch. These are located within the forest, about a half mile walk from the entrance, although you can drive to an adjacent car park if you wish.

Please list your name in this thread if you are interested and do ask if you have any questions.

It will be great to have you along, Graham. Hopefully you won't notice too much change in the forest, but I'm sure you will appreciate the better toilet and catering facilities.

9AM seems a bit late compared to last time we were there

          I hope to be there...

Haha, I've just checked and in 2011 the regular meeting time was 10.00am, which makes me wonder if I have pitched this one too early! I did have a 6.00am option for those who wanted to catch the early light but as I recall only myself and Simon (The Saint) took advantage of it.

I'm willing to have an optional early start again if there is a demand for it.

Maybe it was an earlier meet - I was definitely there at dawn. I will have a look at my photo archive

My Apologies, John - I confused Hatfield Forest with Epping Forest The latter meet was in November 2008. Here's a reminder:

John, might you consider an earlier date as I'm noticing the flowers are around 3 weeks early compared to last year - although it's true that last spring was exceptionally cold so delaying the flowering season, this spring has been exceptionally mild and could be bringing the blooms forward more than they were delayed last year. Didn't we have this problem with the buttercups last time?

That's a good point, Ian, I'll try to visit the Forest this weekend to assess the situation.
