  • Filming in 4K 4:3 anamorphic mode, time limit 30 minutes

I want to make video in 4K 4:3 ratio, to be able to use an anamorphic lens, so the result after processing will be a cinema like 2.66:1.
The GH4 and GH5 did already get new firmware to make this possible, but the GX8 did not.

As the GH5 and the GX8 do almost have the same technical architecture, it should not be to difficult for Panasonic to come up with new firmware to add this feature.
Also the time limit of 30 minutes should be removed, so the camera can be used for recording concerts etc from a fixed position.

Does anyone know if there will be new firmware for the GX8, or that there are some hacks around to release these features?

The GX8 is more aimed at consumers users who are not likely to be trying what you are proposing, so in my opinion this is not likely. The GH series is aimed at advanced and professional users - so this is the camera, arguably, you should be using.

Hacks is another thing entirely - you might be more lucky, but I am not personally aware of any.

      Ian, thanks for your opinion.

Probably, 80% of the users only use 20% of the capabilities of a camera. So adding a feature doesn't make a big difference.
In fact, the capability of shooting video in 4:3 is already available for the GX8 in 4K photo mode.
The only difference with normal 4K video is that sound recording is disabled.

Adding an attribute in the Picture Menu for 4k video for enabling sound recording yes/no would do.
It would really help the non-professional but hobbying amateurs

Or otherwise, extension of the Video Menu with an item for choosing 4K video in the aspect ratio 4:3 would be another option, though then the GX8 comes near to the GH5, which might have marketing implications, as you notice.
