Well they are impressive upto/including iso 3200.

But I wonder how long we'll have to wait before Olympus gets that sensor to play with.

I was very impressed, bearing in mind we are looking at a 16mp 4/3 sensor. As you say, though, how long before Olympus get it? They haven't even got the GH1 sensor yet. Maybe they'll get it for the E-7 in four years time - by which time Panny will probably be using a 20mp sensor with clean ISO 12800!

I mean, you could use 6400 out of that. And if it continues the normal Panasonic trend, the gain will be nearly as high at 6,400 as a CaNikon at 12,800

Yes - I have a horrible feeling that the technology transfer agreement ran out at 12mp. After all who would have anticipated the growth in pixel density at the time the E-1 was delivered and the 4/3'rds deal negotiated.

But if Olympus could get that sensor - what a game changer camera that would make.

Re: GH2 Noise - What Noise?

By all accounts, the GH2 sensor is quite expensive. But costs do come down and with luck it, or something similar, will be in the Olympus roadmap eventually. The sensor is made by Panasonic's semiconductor division and they are independent of Panasonic Lumix. I'm sure they are pursuing Olympus as a customer for the 16MP part. As I metioned before, a major part of the secret to the GH2 sensor's improved nosie performance (and that of the GH1's sensor) is that the A/D converter is on the same silicon as the sensor. This means no off-chip noise is introduced. I'm only guessing, but Olympus might have to re-engineer their TruePic image processor to make it compatible. Anyway, I'm sure Olympus is acutely aware of the benefits of the latest Panasonic sensors.
