  • Flash for Panasonic GH1 or G5

Anyone know an external flash for a Panasonic GH1 or G5 where the AF-assist light on the flash is activated by the camera?

I tried the Pana FL360 and FL500, the Oly Fl36R and a Metz 58, without succes.

According to Panasonic Netherlands the problem is the difference between 'Phase Difference Autofocus Technology' (Four Third) and the 'Contrast Autofocus System' of the Micro Four Thirds camera's. The latter is not compatible with the flashes I tried.

    Thanks in advance,
    Nico

I originally thought the new Olympus FL-600R would do AF illumination, but despite having a powerful LED for video lighting it doesn't have an AF assist mode, sadly.

The AF assist lights in the older units are red and not very contrasty so unlikely to work with contrast detect AF.

      Thanks for your reply Ian.
It amazes me that this problem is so little known. Even Panasonic Holland was not aware of it.
Could it be that the AF-assist in the camera itself is always sufficient for focussing?
