  • E-P5 wifi remote

Does anyone know whether the EP5's wifi functionality be updated to mirror the E-M1's? It would be great if it were. I prefer the separate viewfinder on the ep5 but really want the manual modes in remote control for group shots and self timer type shots.

    Cheers,

    Vince

I am fairly sure the E-P5 will share the updated functionality, but I will check.

      Thanks Ian, I appreciate it.

Do you know what the range of the wifi is roughly? I assume it's not that far.

It can vary but 15 metres seems to be the guide.

ePhotozine has some pictures of an OM-D E-M1 on tripod perched in a pond (or a stream - can't tell) and then with a woman on a horse galloping by. This was to demonstrate both remote shooting and weatherproofing. I didn't see that the range was mentioned... There are pictures both of the setup and of the horse with splashing water flying towards the camera :-)

Oops, I now see Ian has a photo of the same setup in his Splash Proof post :-)

The Android app has now been updated (just yesterday) - I will check to see how it compares with the E-P5 and E-M1 this morning.

OK - not good news, I am afraid. E-P5 wifi functionality with the Olympus Image Share App remains iAuto only.

I have been in touch with Olympus' Akira Watanabe in Japan about this and he says they are looking into the possibility of providing the extra functionality, but there are no promises.

Well I really hope they can... not only did they remove the option of having the large grip from the EP3 but also give us a crippled WiFi solution... this really sounds like a marketing decision rather than a technical decision.

I can assure you that the people who can make this happen are very aware of my views, which I share with you.

The grip option is more understandable - they needed a non-metallic window in the body for the wifi antenna.

                      Re: E-P5 wifi remote

Thanks for raising it with them Ian... I understand why they removed the changeable grip, even thought I'd rather have that than WiFi! I've been keeping my eye open for third-party grips for the EP5 (as people have developed for the EM5) but I've not come across anything as yet.

There was only a few months between the release of the EP5 and EM1 so I'd be surprised if the WiFi functionality was finalised that late in the EM1s development.

Thanks Ian, that's disappointing to hear. Camera companies in general need to get their heads around updating software more regularly. After all, the phone companies do it all the time and still sell millions of phones to repeat customers every year. It seems odd that this hasn't made it across to cameras.

I hope they do see the light and open this functionality up, I cannot believe it is a huge amount of work given the similarities between the cameras and a firmware update with a meaningful functional upgrade would be great.

Hi. New to the forum and about to switch from 4/3 (E600) to a smaller kit. I'd love to stick with Olympus and I like the look of the EP5 but it's impossible to find any info about the remote shooting capabilities - will they be upgraded in line with the EM10? It seems crazy that Olympus wouldn't update a top of the line model if they could - but I'm beginning to wonder whether Olympus actually just abandon cameras after they're released... Any more news on the updated app and whether it'll bring any more functionality to the EP5?

Not abandoned, but it does seem a bit of neglect & for something that might help with the sale of this model. We were pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of two features in the latest E-M5 firmware update (small focus target points & ISO Low) that was on lower models soon after the E-M5. On being a little cynical, they needed it since they were now marketing a Pro Kit version of the E-M5 (updated outer & with the 12-40 lens), because they obviously intend to keep selling the E-M5, we original E-M5 owners benefited, but we probably wouldn't have otherwise (if a replacement model was coming).
