  • E-5 Sample and Review Aggregation

So far the E-5 purchase poll has lots of "after the price drops" responses, with "No" being a distant second. I thought it might also be helpful to pull together information in the camera in to one post, since there are disparate posts all over the place with information on the camera. So, here are some links, samples now, I will add reviews as they become available. If you know of another, post a link, and I can add it to this first post! Thanks so far go to Ian for his hard work at Photokina, and of course for this web site! Thanks also go out to Greytop and Barrie who have foxed out some of the links provided herein.

Re: E-5 Sample and Review Aggregation

The samples from Ian are all with date and time, the samples from DPReview and Fotopolis are all without date and time. This could mean that the used bodies with DPReview and Fotopolis are pre-pre-production models and the one from Ian a pre-production. It could also mean that the samples from DPReview and Fotopolis aren't taken with an E-5 and comes from something else. Can hardly believe that date and time don't work in a pre-production model because this is so basic. Judging the samples I suggest the samples from Ian, don't know what to think from the other two.

A marker about the professional opinion, I don't see "the professional" in it nor information which could set me on or off for the plan to buy an E-5. Up to now everyone is looking for the surface easy to see things, not what's done inside, not whats done with the complaints from the E-3. I don't have problems with focus, but some of us do and get them repeatedly under different conditions.

Re: E-5 Sample and Review Aggregation

Well, DPReview is reliable, and the EXIF data from those shots clearly states that they were taken with an E-5. And while the pro's opinion was a forum post, it was the woman that you can see a rather large picture of on this page:
      http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_se...p?product=1525

Would I take her view as unbiased? No, but she is a pro who has spent a significant amount of time with the camera.

Joop - I just checked the EXIF data on all of them, Fotopolis, DPReview, and Ian's samples all are from an E-5 running the same software version. fyi

Don't know about the rest of you guys, but I have pre-ordered and can't wait to get this new camera! The E-3 has been faithful and fun to use and will now be used strictly for work. I don't think I can stand to part with my E-510 that has been in storage as a back-up unit should the E-3 go down.

              Anybody else going to order?

Re: E-5 Sample and Review Aggregation

I've compared some of the images posted so far with those I have taken with my D700.

Using a full size image at 6400 ISO and applying a little noise control from Topaz I am finding that when printed at 10X8 versus a print from the D700 at the same settings there is no real difference in print quality. I suspect that I will find the same when I try some 11X14 prints.
Given that I'm comparing a 4/3 sensor to a FF sensor this is impressive performance and I am saving my pennies already.
My future working system looks like it will be a D700 for wide angle work and an E5 for medium/long telephoto work. And I will have two totally capable systems backing up each other.

I didn't realize that either, Reggie.

Appreciate it! I will watch it, I figured as reviews roll in, I would add a couple, I wouldn't suspect there will be a ton more samples, it's time for some real reviews! I can't wait!

That being said, that set that Barrie just posted is awesome.

Re: E-5 Sample and Review Aggregation

This has only one sample scene, and is only at ISOs 1600 and 3200, but includes a comparison I have been looking for, the E-3, E-5, and...D700! While there is a clear advantage to the D700 (the high ISO king outside the D3s), I think there is some smudging there, indicating significant NR from the D700's JPEG engine (something we have all suspected for a while). I do wish he supplied the RAWs, any way, here's everything!

Thank you, John! I keep checking for actual reviews, and have thus far have found nothing (other than Robin Wong's, of course) I am getting anxious. Although I realized the other day that Pop Photo, who I have been checking, probably won't put it on their site until after they have published it in their magazine. Meh, I guess these reviews take some time to put together. But we must be getting very close to that release date, do we yet have anything more definitive than "in October"?

I've updated the list in the opening post and made this thread a sticky.

Don't know if anyone has downloaded any of the files to play with them on their computer yet . . .

. . . but I did (the set of Jpegs) and was very please to find that the 6400 under that good lighting was probably as good as 3200 ISO on my E-3 - - - but with nicer detail I think - and no visible banding. I printed out a quality glossy print of it without any noise reduction and while the subtle noise is there, it is a pretty nice looking 8x10. I could easily add Define (noise reduction) and clean it up decently and also have the 8x10 high gloss print to prove it.

3200 ISO looked better than the 6400 result and cleaned up easily with Define, while maintaining more detail. The 1600 ISO result was very pleasing.

Based on these samples, I could easily use 1600 ISO and lower for even portrait work with my weddings - and for sure the 3200 and probably even 6400 ISO for my lower light candid images without the noise being excessive and with a pretty detailed and colorful image quality.

Unfortunately because of being copyrighted images, I can't even take a picture of the prints that I made to show you how nice they are. You'll just have to try them yourself and see if the results won't work with the style of images that you take. BTW - ISO 100 and 200 - - - stunning ::: ISO 400 and 800 - - - remarkable!
