  • How to turn AF flash assist off?

Hey, does anyone know how to turn AF flash assist off on the E400? I wanted to take some that required a fast shutter speed, so I ramped the ISO up, set the shutter speed and popped open the flash. It was for fast moving objects, and I had the focus already set, but it seems the camera will automatically use the flash to do a strobe run and refocus. My friend has an E510 and he has an option on the tool1 symbol menu to turn it off, but there seems to be nothing such for the E400.

It's extremely annoying because I missed out on some great shots due to this - there was no way I was strobing in the middle of a crowd and dazzling people rather than having a simple flash going.

    Cheers.

Ah, I just read marcof's blog on it, it's not possible. That's just... wow, it's incredible.

Yes, I can confirm that - I spoke to a contact and there is no work around, apart from using an external flash. It's only the E-400, though - the E-500, 510 and 410 are different and the flash AF assist can be canceled. And the indications are that the E-400 is not going to get any further firmware upgrades.

I sent an email there last night before you replied so will be interesting to see how they respond. I'll be very disappointed to be honest, the camera is less than a year old, and it's a pretty simple enough feature to have.

Hello, maybe i have got it wrong, but if you just want a full flash without the strobe, you have to go to info, on the lcd schreen select flash, then select what setting you want "full' 'second curtain' 1/4' anything you like. Hope this helps.
          cheers mike.

I haven't got an E-400 in front of me to try that, but the original issue was the camera strobing the flash to help the AF find focus. If you are using AF you can't switch this off if the flash is 'up' - at least not on the E-400.

Hmm does the cam use assist strobe always At least mine doesn't, it only strobes when it's so dark that achieving focus would be slow without flash..? If you want to stop a moving object with flash in dark conditions, why not pre-focus with af + assist strobe and then lock the focus using AEL button or just manual focus, then assist strobe is not used

You posted you are prefocusing, even without the flash the camera will try to focus again as soon as you press the shutter.

Switch to manual focus, this will not only stop the refocusing but keep the flash from discharging it strobing.

I use to hate it when the flash would strobe till I had to wait for the flash to recharge to take the shot.

Would it work to use auto focus, focus lock, switch to manual focus, then take shots?

I sent a letter of complaint for whatever good it will do to Olympus. I'll be sure to mention the reply I get.

Yes, that should work. If the camera isn't running its AF system, then the flash shouldn't strobe. Have you tried this work around yet?

I'll give it a belt once I can use the camera again. I've been bogged down with work the last week or so and haven't had time to make a decent meal, let alone touch the game. Will give it a belt tonight. Fingers crossed!

Only if the flash is down when you focus, If it is up then it will stobe.

You could focus with the flash down, switch to MF, raise the flash and take the shot.

The flash won't focus strobe in manual focus mode, which is what he's suggesting. The only thing in his work around that is unnecessary is the use of focus lock before going to manual mode.

Naturally, you need to be careful to not move the manual focus ring at this point.

So I received a phone call from Olympus this morning.

Basically there are no plans to bring out firmware to address this problem, and when I pushed on plans for any firmware again there was no plans. I asked why they say "Discontinued model" on the website for a camera that is out less than one year, and they said we bring out new cameras every six months and that's how it is.

I then pressed and said what, so you don't support camera's after six months? That's a pretty poor deal and he backtracked and said no no we do support the camera after six months but we will not address specific issues like this, for this I must buy a newer model.

And that was it. No "We're sorry you're disappointed that this feature isn't there" no attempt whatsoever to reach out. Thank's a lot, Olympus
