  • Largest sized card for an E-400?

Picked up a 16gb card this morning for my E-400, only to get an 'Error' message when I put it in. My E-1 does the same as well. Is there a maximum capacity card which these cameras can handle (I've been using 8gb cards), or do I just have a faulty card? My computer seems to read the card just fine.

Have you tried formatting the card in the camera? I can't think of a reason why an E-400 wouldn't be able to work with this card, nor the E-1 for that matter. It may simply have an incompatible format applied to it.

Cheers for the suggestion, Ian. I tried reformatting it in-camera and just got an error message; and then reformatted on my computer in FAT32 and it still didn't work. It's a cheapy card from MyMemory - I've had a couple of dud ones from them before (which, I might add, they've been very quick to replace). Just wanted to check it'd actually broken before I gave them a call on Monday.

Try formatting FAT16 (which may simply be called FAT).

I may be wrong, but I think formatting anything in Windows in FAT16 means it can only have a maximum partition size of 4Gb... as far as I can remember, XP/Vista don't have a FAT16 option anyway.

I have a SanDisk 16GB Extreme III at the office. I'll see if it works OK on an E-400 tomorrow.

Hi all - not forgotten about this, but it turned out that my E-400 was at home in the first place and my 16GB card was waiting to be recovered as it had become corrupted. It's being backed up now (quite a long job for a 16GB card!).

OK - finally got my 16GB card sorted out (SanDisk Extreme III) and it has formatted fine (FAT32) in an E-400, with 16GB on tap

Cheers for this, Ian - my card is awaiting a refund but I might try another...

Re: Largest sized card for an E-400?

Is cheap memory worth the risk when good quality memory isn't that expensive now?

My first foray into digital photography with an Olympus C750 was five years ago. The 512 Mb XD card I bought at the same time cost nearly half as much as the camera.
                    Regards,

I read somewhere this week that the first 1gb card (an IBM Microdrive) cost 1000 new - back when 1000 meant something !

Thanks for your help, everyone. MyMemory sent me a replacement card - a Lexar-branded 80x 16gb one - and that works fine!
