  • HELP! What am I seeing?

When in raw I am surprised to see a maze like pattern showing when viewing my images at 100%. This is especially visible in the red and orange colors.
The first example, Image Area, is a screen shot of my raw dialog box showing the pattern at 100%. The other example, Image Area Magnified, is screen shot of the unsharpen mask dialogue box showing the pattern a 200%.
Can someone give me an idea on what am I seeing?

You are seeing demosaicing artefacts from turning the bayer pattern of Red-Green1-Green2-Blue pixels back into a colour image. This looks like your raw converter is a bit basic - Adobe Camera Raw and other advanced converters smooth out these artefacts in a more sensible way. It will be more noticeable on mainly red or mainly blue images as you are only really illuminating a quarter of the pixels (either Red or Blue).

    See Bayer filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Bayer_pattern_on_sensor.svg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/37/Bayer_pattern_on_sensor.svg/350px-Bayer_pattern_on_sensor.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@common s/thumb/3/37/Bayer_pattern_on_sensor.svg/350px-Bayer_pattern_on_sensor.svg.png

Sharpening will make the demosaic artefacts worse...

          Re: What am I seeing?

I should have included what photo imaging software I'm using. Photoshop CS. To get a better handle on demosaicing artefacts I did some reading and I think I'm able to understand what you are talking about. Do I need to up grade? CS5 or will Lightroom handle demosaicing artefacts as well. An CS5 upgrade might be to $$$$

          Thank You Casey

Lightroom is a lot better than that - same engine as CS5. There are some freeware options you might try too. Personally, I use Lightroom and occasionally CS5 when I need to

              That's a lot of sharpening for a 5 MP E-1 image!
              Regards Paul.

                Re: What am I seeing?

I overly sharpened the image to exaggerate the maze I was seeing. The raw shot was the typical 25% that is set in the program. I went back to the raw file and set the sharpen to 0 and the image softened up a lot but I could still see the demosaicing artefacts. I usually use no more than 40% in unsharpen mask or use the high pass method.
