  • The big Olympus E-System wish list!

Akira Watanabe, who is a senior manager at Olympus in charge of development of their E-System DSLR platform, has asked me to create a list of possible feature additions to future cameras and other system products, in order of popularity.

Below is a list of the most common 'wishes' that are frequently expressed. If you have another to add to this list, please respond to this thread and post your wish, or wishes.

Once we have a, more or less, complete list, I will create a poll so that we can gauge and order of popularity. I will be doing a similar project over at Olympus UK E-System User Group (e-group.uk.net), and the results of the two sites' polls will be amalgamated and then presented to Mr.Akira.

So, here goes - the most frequently voiced wishes that I, personally, recall - include:
    1. Improved dynamic range.
    2. Improved high ISO noise performance.
    3. Improved continuous AF performance.
    4. Improved AF consistency with different SWD lenses.
    5. More fast prime lenses, especially portrait, standard, and wide angle.
    6. Longer telephoto lens options.
    7. Infra red remote control sensor on the back of the camera, as well as on the front (for operation from behind the camera).
    8. Olympus Studio development to deliver live view tethered shooting on your PC screen without the need for a video cable.
    9. Implementation of multi-spot metering.
    10. Focus indication for legacy lenses.
    11. Custom modes save to compact flash card function for easy transfer to other cameras or re-installation after a camera reset.
    12. HD video support.
    13. Replacement of xD PictureCard slot with an SD card slot.
    14. Dual-slot saving, for example JPEG to xD/SD, RAW to CF slot.
    15. Tilt shift lenses.
    16. E-620 or similar sized model with E-3 standard alloy body and weather proofing.
    17. Faster shooting rate (8fps) for E-3 replacement.
    18. More quiet shutter/mirror than existing models (matching the mechanical standard set by the E-1).
    19. More powerful flash with faster recycling from AA batteries.
    20. In-camera wireless connectivity.
    21. Re-introduction of a manual AF mode switch (like the E-1).
    22. Introduction of quick-release camera strap.
    23. Affordable weather-sealed E-System model.
    24. High resolution LCD screen
    25. Red low light AF assist light instead of strobing flash.
    26. Larger viewfinder view.
    27. Wider range of interchangeable focus screens, including a split prism type.
    28. Low ISO, mode, e.g. 50.
    29. Configurable neutral density graduated filter extension to Creative Art Filters.
    30. Level sensors in all models, not just the E-30.
    31. Improved alternative to HLD-4 grip (better construction, maybe alloy) better feel.
    32. GPS add-on for geo-tagging, or maybe built in (higher end models).
    33. Ability to customise file names and metadata in-camera or via Master/Studio for the camera to apply automatically (copyright, name, etc.).
    34. USB-charging of batteries, maybe in-camera?
    35. Firmware update option that does not rely on a Web connection.

So if you have any wishes or suggestions to add, please post your suggestion to this thread!

Re: The big Olympus E-System wish list!

    Dear Ian,

    Certainly a good list.

I have 3 things (though) to the list

1)Large viewfinders (at least the size of E3 viewfinder).

I currently have an E510 and am so keen on upgrading to the E3. The E30's very good and perhaps the E620's even better ISO and HDR performances makes me wait hoping for an E3 replacement in the coming 6- 9 months. I think the E30 viewfinder is allright but still not good enough for manual focus (in paticular with legacy lenses). I am not sure I understand your item 16 and 17 (is that both referring to qualities of an E3 replacement or two different bodies?) I would be sorry if an E3 replacement were to reduce any of its many qualities and in particualr the viewfinder.

2)Secondly and on the same note, I would like the possibility for more exchange focusing screens and in particular a focusing screen with split field in the center.

    3) Thirdly Low ISO (eg ISO 50). I still think, that the possibility for shooting at low ISO (eg 50) like can be done with the D700, D3 and is planned for the Leica S2 is appealing. In very bright daylight to be able to shoot at shutter speeds above 1/4000 and still have very open (small) apeture like f2/f2.8. That would be possible by going down to low ISO.

        Hi Ian,
I would like to add the following to the list...
        1. Bigger and higher quality screen- D300 class
        2. Vertical grip with better built quality- at least the same as HLD2 or magnesium would be better.
        3. In body red focus assist light-the current blinking strobe is annoying.
That is all i could think of...for now. he he
        Regards,
        Alfred

WOW, that pretty much summons what I could wish for new 4/3 developments. I have here a few minor wishes:

I was thinking- isn't it possible to get rid of the pop-up flash? I know that right now it triggers remote wireless flashes, but there must be other implementations possible?

An other wish could be a high resolution LCD, like the G1.

I would also like to see a viewfinder implementation of level gauges - not only the horisontal, but also the vertical. Actually I find the latter more important, as distorted lines from tilting the camera is difficult to cure in PP.

Finally i could wish for a more customable viewfinderinfo. Not that i'm missing info currently. More I would sometimes like to have a simpler, more uncluttered view. If possible with the choice of magnifying certain infos, like shutter speed/f-no.

A universal battery system that could be sourced for charging from a regular usb-port and/or perhaps even from a car outlet.

A firmware upgrade system that would permit download of the upgrade file and subsequent camera / lens/whatever firmware upgrade without hooking up to the net.

lens caps with ... strings attachable so that we don't loose them so easily.

The E-30 has both left/right (horizontal) tilt and vertical tilt levels, but as I think you are alluding to, the vertical tilt indication is not shown in the viewfinder, only on the LCD.

Same battery fits all models, switchable rule of thirds grid in the viewfinder a la Nikon, and specially built for me personally a 620 with a bigger grip and high res screen.

Full list to be implemented by the end of the year

                    Cheers

I think the battery thing is a bit much - neither Nikon or Canon have a single battery, and the BLM-1 is too big for the E-4xx,6xx.

I will add the in-screen grid request, but that's quite a big ask if you ask me. It involves adding an LCD to the viewfinder optics. And of course you already have this in the live view screen.

Erm, they didn't used to have live view or dedustification systems either

Also Panasonic managed to get a big battery in the G1 which is even smaller!

The G1 battery is quite a bitsmaller than a BLM-1.
