Well I, for one, am not shy - then again I only joined a couple of hours ago, haven't even looked around everywhere. So, just leaving a scent mark for the time being. Count me in.
    Cheers,

Well, I did spring for a D-Lux 3 if that counts. I't so handy to stick in your pocket when you just don't feel like carting around the Olys. It's a 10mp in 16 x 9 and 7.1mp in 4 X 3. Lens is a vario-elmarit 6.3-25.2, 1:2.8-4.9 asph. The pix are outstanding. I use it for a lot of mandolin web shots and it takes a pretty darn good closeup too. Can't say as I'd consider the Digilux 3 as it's $2400 here, and I have the lens...(well, the Lumix), and I'm saving my $$$ for the E-P3, P-1, E3, P3, whatever they finally call it.

If this part of the forum is related only to 4:3 Leica Digiliux 3, should be joined with Lumix L1 threads just because is exactly the same camera, no?
I think in that way we can share more opinions about this system

It's not really the same camera - 99% the same, but the 1% difference is reasonably significant. Leica has imposed different image preference defaults for a start.

Sure it is David, just like my M5, M6 and M8 but we have to crop them to 4:3
The M8 is like two 4/3rds in one....take two E-1 sensors, joint along the long side, deepen the pixel wells and you are there..

omg if one more person says the panasonic is the same as the leica I may just die.

k, the difference is, the panasonic's firmware is how panasonic wanted it. you get the image the way they think is best. Same for Leica... now who exactly do you think knows best?

Well, for fun let's see who might know best. Camera bodies, sensor and lenses come off of the same assembly lines. Panasonic might do their firmware in-house and Leica probably farms their's out (probably to Panasonic). Leica has just recently started doing in-house firmware on the M8 and hired two people to do it. The consumer lines of Leica cameras are esentially 99% out-sourced. Only the professional lines, the M & R assembled in-house, using many out-sourced components. Panasonic has made more digital camera models and had more chances to make the usual mistakes. The real question is just how different are the raw files and how significant is that with the various raw developers. I doubt that Leica uses a different processor from the Venus Engine Mk?. JPEG defaults are different for saturation, contrast and NR. So, who knows who knows best or even the most?

Re: Are Leica users just shy or really really rare?

Well now, as I have a Digilux 3 and my wife has a Lumix L1, I have been able to use and compare both in the real world of photography and not the false one of test benches and theoretical specifications.

I cannot see the so called difference between the two camera in the final images once processed and printed. I do see the cosmetic differences in the cameras themselves - the D3 being silver and squarer in the body than the black and more rounded off L1. But to me that is it. Oh and Leica claim that the D3 is hand assembled - whatever that means?

The biggest real world difference is in the price - I paid a lot of extra money for the little red circle on the front of the D3 even though I got mine with a 30% + "loyalty discount" from Leica.

Oh and in the the resale values - I saw a used D3 go on ebay recently for £940 whereas you can get a new L1 currently for £599 from Jacobs Cameras which indicates that the current resale value of an L1 would be relatively little indeed. Anyone who paid £1299 for the L1 at the start of the year must be a little uncomfortable with this.

As for brand values, well older photogs recognise the Leica brand and hence something of what it once stood for, but interestingly younger ones tend not to and are much more familiar with the Panasonic brand. It is very odd having to explain to someone who Leica are when at one time they would have been instantly recognised.

Anyway I still value my D3 very highly and also the L1; they are both excellent cameras not-with-standing all of the recent releases by various makers of their latest high tech (and mostly unneeded) wizardry. Just better ways of parting good photogs from their hard earned cash and not adding much real value to the art of photography IMO. I shall be using my D3 for a long time to come.
