It's Not Working

The idea of this page came from a user at e-group.uk.net and may help to solve some common problems. The format is this: a general problem, followed by a list of possible solutions. If you search the page by a keyword, eg AF, you will find topics relating to that subject, and hopefully your problem. It is also segregated by camera model, and approximate topic, to make it easier to browse. It is very much a work in progress, and will get more and more useful the more contributors it gets.

[edit] Focus / Blur

  • Photos are not sharp
    • If trying to use AF, is the camera set to AF?
    • If using manual focus (M), is the diopter adjustment set correctly?
    • Are you set to AF-C? If so try AF or M. The camera may be tracking/refocusing as you shoot.
    • Is the camera confirming AF lock? If not it may be too dark or too low contrast to get a focus lock. There is also a known issue with some repetitive linear patterns (e.g. a stack of plates).
    • Despite shooting using a tripod (and checking for AF/MF issues as above) the photo is still blurry
      • Check to see if you have IS disabled (for completely static work), or set to Mode 2 (for panning only).
      • Try turning on Anti-Shock (AKA Mirror Lock-Up) to prevent camera shake being introduced by depressing the shutter and mirror movement.

[edit] Miscellaneous

  • It's making juddering/funny noises when I turn it off
    • It is most likely perfectly normal. To quote the manual, "Turning off the camera initializes the image stabilization function." If you are bothered by it, you can prevent it by turning IS off before powering down the camera.
    • It could be the lens being reset to infinity. The camera is set to do this by default every time you switch it off. This can be turned off in the menus.
  • Lens aperture information not showing in the top LCD display on E1 and E3 and the lens does not focus

This is caused by the lens failing to communicate with the camera body, to prove it check the firmware and you wll see only the camera body firmware and not the lens firmware version.

Olympus Technical Customer support suggest that you exercise the pins within the lens mount of the body, push the pins in and out several times and ensure that all the pins are extended fully before the lens is replaced and lens tested.

The Customer person indicated that this is a relatively frequent E System problem.

If the camera and lens still refuse to talk to each other then the camera has to be returned to the service centre.
