Frustrating E-5 Problem

Hey guys, so I've been noticing an issue with my E-5 and I figured I'd ask here since I haven't heard of this before.

A lot of the time, regardless of whether or not I attach it to the computer, the camera sends itself into the USB connection menu. This morning I had it on my tripod, set up for shots by the window. Took two or three shots, turned it off. Turned it on a few minutes later and it was back in the USB screen thinking it is plugged in.

This has happened a number of times recently, and it's rather irritating when it does happen. When the camera does work normally (which is usually 99% of the time) it's amazing, but this started about two weeks ago and happens on and off and makes the camera unusable for a while. Anyone hear of any bugs like this or have any issues?

Re: Frustrating E-5 Problem

Sorry Jason, I've never heard of this issue but I can apppreciate how frustrating it is. It's certainly not goood enough for a camera like the E-5 and I'd suggest contacting Olympus. If you do, let us know the outcome. Good luck.

Re: Frustrating E-5 Problem

I never owned a card reader, done it the same way four years in a row with the E-410 and then the E-3, I'm surprised the E-5 had this issue.

More surprising is last time when it triggered that menu, I wasn't connecting to the computer. I took a few shots and then it went into it, so it's definitely something strange in there!

I'll give them a call tomorrow and hope they have an answer,

Jason

Re: Frustrating E-5 Problem

I'm sorry you have encountered this problem with the E-5. Mine has not shown signs of this happening.
I hope your call to service produced a satisfactory answer.

Regards. Barr1e

Re: Frustrating E-5 Problem

Yes, this problem is not one I have heard of before. I have heard of issues where the camera isn't recognised by Olympus Viewer or Olympus Master and is almost certainly a USB driver issue.

Re: Frustrating E-5 Problem

Well darn. Here's the email I got after driving an hour each way to a special repair shop (not upset at them, upset that the camera failed this way. They were amazing there)

Good afternoon Jason,

I have been in contact with Olympus America regarding the repair of your camera. They suggested the camera be taken to Trinitek in Mississauga for service. I have found the problem with your camera to be with the main circuit. If you have any influence with Olympus and taking into consideration the urgency of your camera, I would suggest a replacement camera be requested.

Your camera is at our location for you to pick up. Unfortunately, you will have to contact Trinitek for service for the problem you are encountering. Sorry we could not be of assistance.

Frustratingly due to a move I have no proof other than a forum post here and pictures from the day I got it. I am using a higher up friend at Olympus and praying we can get it replaced. Considering the camera has been out less than a year it shouldn't be a question of warranty on an issue where the camera was a clear lemon and there was no physical damage. The store is sending a write up about how it was not my fault, the camera was in mint condition, and they sent a bad unit.

Let's hope!

Re: Frustrating E-5 Problem

I think this is straightforward - the camera is well within its international warranty period. I had one of the very first models before it went on sale at the end of last September, so the camera is no more than 9 months old.
