Yes I use it if I suspect or find a lens focus is out.
It's a bit of a tedious procedure so I'm hardly enthused about having to do it but it's a useful feature.
For most of the time my E3 focussed fine but there were occasions where I suspected the focus with a certain lens was out.

I tried a few methods but in the end I tried a method that worked for me although probably not the recommended way to do it.
I set the lens to wide and photographed objects around the house, each at various distances and picking a particular point on each object that would ensure the camera would get a good focus lock. I didn't use a tripod I just handheld the camera. I did this at focus adjustment settings of -10, -5, 0, +5 and +10. Then I examined the shots and noted the focus and decided which settings were the closest then repeated but bracketing the most accurate setting from the previous test say it was -5 then I did shots at -7, -6, -5, -4, -3 and inspected them and chose the best one and that was my setting to store. Then the same for the longest lens focal length. Like I said, tedious
I've only done 2 of my lenses, the 14-54 and 14-35 and they both focus fine now, mind you that weren't far out to begin with.

The method I use is a copy of the Telegraph open at the letters page on the kitchen table so I am viewing it at about 30 degrees and use flash with aperture wide open. I need the light above the table to focus and target one particular word. Obviously the distance to subject varies with the lens. It is then easy to make adjustment in the camera as, at the distance I use, one newsprint line = 1 adjustment unit front or back. If you had a Canikon telephoto the minimum focus distance is a little to far at 4.5m but the Oly 300mm is only 2.3m so it makes this method feasible. Works with medium and short zoom equally well.
