I entered our county fair's photo competition again this year with no real expectations. Always waiting until the last moment to decide which pics to enter often leaves me wondering why I chose the ones that I did

. There were about 800 entries in about 65 categories (some with no entries). Only one entry in each category per contestant.
Tonight was the first day of the fair so Maggie and I went to check it out.
We were pretty much blown away to find that out of my eleven entries

I had 2 Firsts, 3 Seconds, 4 Thirds (appropriate I thought) and 1 Honorable Mention.

Maggie entered some of her canned goods and a few antiques. Not very many entries in each category, many with only a couple (too many very specific categories), but none the less she took

firsts with her Tomato Marmalade, Blueberry Chutney, Dilled Greenbeans and Blueberry/Lavender Jam

. And won a special prize for her antique ring.

It was a VERY good evening.

Wow, that's impressive. Good show.

Can you post some winners. Our county fair is more cows and pigs and things and has only 5 photo categories, one of which is 4H.

Most of them are here in my gallery already, the only diffence would be the required 8x10 crop. I was just a little bit overwelmed last night and didn't have pen and paper to mark what got what. I know the two firsts and the honorable mention was my "Papa Exotic Finch" for "Pet Animal", as for the seconds and thirds I honestly don't remember which got what. All categories were for color unless specified

First Prize in the "Wild Animal " category:

First Prize in "Buildings or Structures" Black and White category: This is in color but I converted to monotone as it was almost that way already.

2nd or 3rd - "Buildings or Structures"

2nd or 3rd - "Humor"

2nd - "Flower Study"

Glad some get better luck, I've entered my state Fair a couple times, costs $20 an entree!

Only to get zip, and what does get excepted into the art galleries? Photos from teens and pocket cams, horrid black and white images of them writing messages on their tongue or other parts of their bodies, and poems of pain and heart break... uuuugh

I don't know about the NY State Fair (it's a five hour drive away) but the entry fee in our county fair is 1/10 of the first prize, so it's 50 cents per photo. $11.50 won me $27, but it's not for the money we enter.
Incidently the youth division entries were outstanding. And to encourage the budding talent, those photos not winning a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd received "Excellent" ribbons (and there were MANY) rather than the sticker for "Honorable Mention". Nice touch.

Congratulations, Jeff! Sounds like a lot of fun. I really like county and state fairs, so I'll have to look into entering the photo contests in some local ones.

And I'm not surprised that Maggie won some first prizes for her food. She's an excellent cook!

Congratulations, Jeff! We have a similar competition in our local show - I'm busy planning my entries at the moment. No prize for winning, just a silver cup to keep for a year, but a little local prestige and a lot of fun.
