Comparing the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8

Inspired by the thread here http://www.fourthirds-user.com/forum...ead.php?t=7449 discussing the 14-35 Zuiko Digital and the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, here are some test shots that show the Sigma is rather soft at 50mm although it sharpens up nicely at mid and wide focal lengths:

Olympus Zuiko Digital 12-60mm f/2.8-4 @f/4 and 49mm

The crops shown here are from the centre of the frame.

Even wide open the 12-60 is a still a bit sharper than the Sigma is stopped down to f4.0.

Indeed - and so it should be considering the price difference

The Sigma is much better at 25mm and 18mm than 50mm.

Against the 14-35mm I doubt the Sigma would even be in the same race. That doesn't mean it's not a good lens for the money but if money was no object I know which I would have.
