Exclamation David Bailey to judge Festive Fotos competition!

First of all, an unreserved apology for the long delay processing the votes in the FTU Festive Fotos competition to win an Olympus E-30 DSLR outfit. I'm relieved to say that the 12 short-listed entries will be revealed shortly - certainly no later than Thursday (I'm away on a work trip in Portugal until Wednesday evening). Some final checking of the entries and the voting needs to be done first.

I'm also very pleased to announce that David Bailey, an undisputed icon of British photography, will be judging the competition. Bailey is one of the most famous and accomplished fashion and celebrity photographers of his time, and has photographed, among many others, such luminaries as the Rolling Stones, the 60s gangsters the Kray brothers, the Beatles, actor Jack Nicholson, artist Salvador Dali and, more recently, rock band Oasis, actor Johnny Depp, and supermodel Naomi Campbell. Bailey is not afraid to speak his mind and earlier this year hit the headlines by saying that Princess Diana was not as beautiful as popular opinion suggested. Bailey has been a long time advocate of Olympus cameras and was frequently featured in ad campaigns in print and on TV to promote various camera models, most famously the OM film SLR system in the 70s. Ask virtually anyone in the UK what follows the well known line: "Who do you think you are?..." and I'll bet the response will be 'David Bailey?' in a cheeky cockney accent, a line frequently used in Bailey advertising.

To find out more about David Bailey and to see some some of his work, have a look at his biography on the PDN Gallery site.

More news on the competition soon!

Ian

With a master choosing the winner - wow, that is quite something.

I noticed that the portraits on his website tend to be very dark and brooding. It will be interesting to see how he judges "Festive."

Bailey has a sense of humour, and in any case it's my belief that a good photographer can see a great picture no matter what the category.
