Re: E-M5 Firmware 1.2 released

Hi

Just a word of caution, I updated my EM 5 today from the link and everything seems ok. My brother then did exactly the same, and his camera is now inert. The installation phase did not complete. Olympus Support asked him to send it in and added 'it's not your fault'. I'm not sure what that signifies and whether the problem was the camera or the firmare. Very odd.

Re: E-M5 Firmware 1.2 released

If you haven't updated to 1.2, advice is to wait until clarification from Olympus. I understand there have been some problems with a small number of people's E-M5s after the update.

Re: E-M5 Firmware 1.2 released

I updated my E-M5 with no problems. I used Olympus Viewer 2. First I made sure OV was up to date then plugged in the camera and check for camera updates and followed the on screen instructions.
I had the 12-50 lens and the extra grip attached at the time too. When I plugged the camera into the computer (running Windows 7 Home Premium) I set the camera to storage mode (not sure if that made any difference). I also made sure I had no other application running (even though I have a powerful computer - this is Windows were talking about remember).
Olympus state on their site that it is best not to use a home built computer but use one with a pre installed operating system, not sure of their logic here as my PC is home built - off the shelf PCs are full of rubbish and clutter. I wouldn`t put my trust in an off the shelf PC such as HP, Dell, Acer, PC World and did I mention Dell? All come with extra rubbish cluttering up the system which could potentially affect a firmware update. Also I wouldn`t use things like Norton in any flavour and especially not McCafee and Bullguard - get rid of them or at the very least switch them off before updating your firmware. Olympus really need to do more research about computers before issuing statements like that.
Anyway my camera is working fine with the update.
I don`t know if its me but the focusing with the 12-50 seems even quicker.
But yes good advice Ian, if your camera is working fine and you aren`t planning on being the next Jacques Cousteau then there may not be any need to update just yet.
Andrew.

Re: E-M5 Firmware 1.2 released

The Olympus comment about home-built computers has been around for a fair number of years. It is likely boilerplate from someone in the legal department.

The advice not to have other programs running when you are doing something as critical as a firmware update is sound.

Ian
I notice that the note for the update has been updated to,

"The update service to ver. 1.2 has been temporarily discontinued. We are planning to resume the update service in early October.
The update service to ver. 1.1 is available.
"

Re: E-M5 Firmware 1.2 released

Well, they better make it 1.3 because it seems that 1.2 doesn't work EVEN if upload was successful...
