Digital sound recording

I'm wondering if anyone has gone into recording sound.
I'd like to have a portable 4 track recorder to record, a directional mic, a radio mic, and two inbuilt sterio mics. Good to have the option to send one or two of the lines to the camera.
Any ideas for a brand or model of a suitable recorder?

Re: Digital sound recording

Zoom H4n is popular, I use one and am happy with it. Lots of YouTube examples.

Re: Digital sound recording

And you don't have to send the sound to the camera. I've videoed plenty of bands (multi camera) and overdubbed the sound from the pro recorder on the images. Final Cut Pro X is my editor of choice, but any decent video editing software will do it.

Yes I also use a Zoom H4n!
Just sync the audio up with the on camera audio then edit.

Re: Digital sound recording

I use the Zoom H4N as well. It's very good for the most part, but one thing to watch out for is this: if you plan to use the on board mics, you really can't hold the unit in your hand because the mics are super sensitive and pick up any movement...it only works if you can be perfectly still (which is often not realistic.) Fortunately, there's a socket on it that allows you to screw in things like pistol grips so you're not touching the unit directly. When using external mics, though, it's not a problem and I've been very happy with the unit.

Hope that's helpful,

Eric
