Re: Full size Olympus OM-D E-M5 RAW and JPEG samples to download

I'll be the first to admit that these are not ideal samples. They were taken rather hurriedly just as the booth was being packed up at the end of the first day at Focus on Imaging. The light was dim and from a variety of artificial light sources in an exhibition hall. But at least you can get your teeth into some RAWs and see some full-size high ISO JPEGs that have no noise filter smoothing them. It wasn't feasible to shoot lower than ISO 800 in the light at the time. I'll be much obliged to hear what you think of these images. I'm now being told that I will get hold of my test camera within the next two weeks and possibly quite a bit earlier - so fingers-crossed on that!

Incidentally, you CAN open these RAW files in Olympus Viewer 2. I don't think colour processing is optimised but I have produced results quite comparable with the in-camera JPEGs from RAWs using Viewer 2.

OM-D E-M5 ISO 25,600 sample resized to 800 pixels wide for the Web:

No noise filter in the camera and no noise management in post-processing. All I have done is re-size the camera JPEG. I reckon this will even print well to 10x8.

That would have been impossible with an E-P3 at ISO 12,800.

Ian

PS I am already seeing some comment on other sites about these samples and on person seemed to think the conditions were very bright. If I had shot this image at ISO 200 exposure would have been 1/3rd of second @f/4.

Re: Full size Olympus OM-D E-M5 RAW and JPEG samples to download

What were the settings? I can see Saturation: High and Sharpness: Hard in EXIF, was there any gradation used as well?

There are visible noise maps (purple and yellow-green) on the first picture upon closer look. While details are preserved quite well, this could be hard to remove from low light portraits. But as long as there is no cropping, it may not be a problem on smaller prints and/or screen resolution pictures.

While Viewer2 imho does NR even if you set it to off I developped the 12800iso Orf file in XN view(bad colors). After that I did saturation increase and NR with Noiseware in Photoshop and extra colorNR on selected parts with Define.
I belief that the results are better than my E3 -3200iso.:

Things were rushed and I forgot to check the picture mode setting and this was still on VIVID (which I normally never use) from the last person who had used the camera. But this only affects the JPEGs. In Viewer 2 the RAW will open wiht VIVID set but you can switch to NATURAL.

Thanks a lot for the samples, Ian; they look like a serious improvement in comparison to former Olympus cameras to me.

Cheers
Frank

Thanks Frank - I think it will only be a few days now and I will get a production sample and then we can answer everyone's questions regarding real world performance
