Re: E-5 sample images from Photokina

Thanks, Ian!

They look quite good to me! Even with noise reduction off, they hold up well. How does the AF performance and shutter sound compare to the E-3?

Re: E-5 sample images from Photokina

That shot of the eagle is amazing, a lot of detail in that crop! Looking through all of them, I am disappointed to see noise in the ISO 400 shots, although not anywhere near a level where I think you would see them in print. I am going to make a large print of one to try to confirm my suspicions. I am not convinced that I will get usable shots at higher ISOs than I do with my E-3, but what I do think those showed is a spectacular level of detail! Thanks, Ian. And glad we got to see that auto-focus at work, seemed to be doing quite well!

Re: E-5 sample images from Photokina

Ian:

Can you please try video ? I am mostly interested in understanding how E-5 tracks focus in video. Does it maintain the focus ? Does it make you refocus manually ? Is it like GH1 or is it more like 7D ?

Thanks,
Oleg

Continuous focus is not possible during video recording, apparently. I've not tried on the E-5 yet. But will let you know as soon as I have.

AF performance is better, especially with SWD lenses and just-released new firmware.

The shutter does seem slightly more dampened than the E-3's, but not yet compared back to back at the same time.

In the manual for GH1 I've read that with 4/3 lenses it will refocus while recording a video if you half-press the shutter button. That is acceptable to me. I think 4/3 lenses can't really continuously focus in CDAF mode for whatever reason, but if I can trigger a refocus it is workable.

Video is secondary to my needs, which are basically to be able to take good pictures of my kids. I make short video clips with the Flip and the P&S, but video in an SLR is intriguing.

Just back from the Philippines and am catching up on the posts over the last 8 days. I can confirm that you can refocus with s-af during video recording.
