We have had a brief period with a production-spec. E5 and in responsive to many requests for sample images we have a gallery of 31 hastily assembled JPEG samples for you.
perhaps it's just me, but I feel like I get less noisy images from my E-3...looking forward to some direct comparisons. Thanks for these shots!
I must *stress* that Noise Filtering is set to off in these samples in order to maximise detail. I get told off when I publish JPEG samples with noise filtering set to Standard, but it does make a big difference.
I'm sure that if I had taken the same shots using an E-3 you would see similar levels of noise at the lower ISO settings and a lot more at the higher settings (along with banding), but you are right, back to back examples in controlled conditions would be the best way to demonstrate this and I will endeavour to do this before I leave for the Philippines on Friday.
Well, I am of course having some issues with converting a raw image at the moment, right when I really want to. And sadly, I save RAW+JPEG, but set the JPEGs to small, so this picture is a little downsized, but I still think it gives an idea of what I am getting from my E-3:
That is f/1.4, exp 1/40, ISO 1600. Double checked my camera settings Noise Reduction off, Noise Filter off. The RAW looks great, and once I get my computer to behave, I might even be able to convert a raw (without noise reduction) to post a 100% crop.
Like I said, really looking forward to some side by sides. This certainly isn't scientific, different lens, different lighting, different shutter, etc. But those pictures looked exceedingly noisy to me. Just my 2 cents! Thank you again, and I can't wait for some detailed tests!
Also, just out of curiosity, do you know if you can set the CF card to backup the SD? What I would LOVE the camera to do is write to one quickly, and then backup to the other. That is, I have a fairly slow CF (but it's 32GB), so if I run a few fast 4GB SDs, can I have it write to those, thus giving me the ability to use the fast burst speed, but back them up automatically as I shoot to the CF? Man, I would be a happy camper if that was the case!
EDIT: Flickr is disagreeing with me, you can find the shot I am referring to above here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/56314911@N00/5010456286/

Hi Ian,
It will be appreciated, I'm sure, if you are able to do this but I know you've got a tight schedule and I'm equally sure that members will understand if you are not able to fit it all in. In any case a gallery of "real world" pictures from your trip to the Philippines will be much more valuable so I would urge patience from everyone. The really important thing is to get your trip off to a relaxed start, if possible, and to spend some time with your family, so don't feel committed to do this comparison before you go.

Cheers,
Definitely, sorry if I am being a tad pushy and impatient! There will be other comparisons available, to be sure. I look forward to see what you have to say about it, but the family comes first! I will wait around impatiently, but don't let that bother you! And have a great time when you are away! Is Oly going to be gracious enough to let you cart the E-5 with you?
Hi Ian,
Thanks for the samples. Some of your shots had some "moire-bait" in the building patterns and no obvious moire. A good sign with the lower AA filter. What I have seen so far is very encouraging and I have seen this suspicious "E-1 like" tone curve that didn't quite get there in the E-3, but it could just be my imagination, too.
Have a good trip.
Bob
