Arrow Olympus announces the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6

This affordable complement to the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 18-180mm 1:3.5-6.3 (36-360mm)* enables stunningly original perspectives with an extra-wide field of view.

No pricing yet - it's too early. This lens is not shipping until September - four months from now.

In the States, the release said they expect a "street" price of $599.99, which Olympus being Olympus is what everyone will sell it for.

With your luck over there it'll be £599.00 or so.

The US expected price is certainly going to tempt me.

I would guess the price in the UK, based on the US price, would be £399.This would be about £150 lower than the 11-22, which is faster and has a more rugged, weather-sealed design.

One reason I suspect UK prices are not released far in advance is that the Japanese manufacturers peg their price on the dollar. The UK/dollar exchange can change a lot in 4 months.

Re: Olympus announces the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6

I had not realized that the 11-22 was priced here at $675. (B&H price today). It weighs under a pound as opposed to the 9-18's just over half a pound. Both take a 72mm filter. The 11-22 is High Grade, the 9-18 is standard grade. I'm sure both are optically excellent. The 11-22 is a much faster lens.

But for $75 more I can have the 11-22 now.

I wonder why Olympus is offering this lens if the price will really be $600. I mean they could have spent the time on my 40mm f/1.2. Or something else. I guess this is the same incrementalism that has resulted in the 520 (nice, but not worth the price if you have a 510), instead of the missing E-50 (say a weather-proofed 520).

Chrs, Stv

And now back to the B&H web site, credit card to hand.

The 11-22 is one of the original E-System lenses almost and it has been around for ages. Its shine has been taken away a bit by the 12-60, so 11-22s are understandably discounted these days.

$600 isn't affordable, for $75 more you can get the pro level 11-22 or for 200 less get the Sigma 10-20 (not sure about IQ)

I would be interest in seeing the IQ comparison between these 3 lens
