E-3 Successor

My local Olympus camera shop tells me that the successor to the E-3 will be released in May 2010. Anyone know anything about this?

Re: E-3 Successor

They probably got their information from 43rumors.com

If this rumor is true, great. If not, the wait continues. I'm sure the wait will be worth it.

Yes, this is on 4/3 Rumours. Note, however, that it is rumour level 2 - which even by that site's own standards is wild speculation. O.K, they might get lucky and actually be right this time. They rumour and speculate about the E5 so often that the law of averages says that one day they will be right, and when that happens with a big fanfare they'll say "We told you first!"

Anyone can play that game. Personally I'm looking forward to the E6 which I confidently predict will be released within the next ten years. When it happens remember that you heard it first here on FTU!

Re: E-3 Successor

Well said John! I am one for using the camera I currently have... My ability is still nowhere near exceeding the capability of the E3.

I'm with Ian. If indeed it gets released, I hope it delivers.

I would have thought an announcement, or "mock-up" on display at Fotokina in Sept., this year and released for sale in 2011.

jpeg engine improvements aside, the only real step-up in RAW quality from 4/3s has been with the GH1 sensor with onboard processing. This is expensive to produce and I think Panasonic need to get there new production plant "onstream" to make production economic. So I would expect 2011, although if they have another suitable sensor to compete at the semi-pro level (7D, D400 shortly) I would be most pleasantly surprised to be wrong.

Re: E-3 Successor

I don't believe the May 2010 introduction date, but Olympus had better not wait until 2011. I think that the E-5 needs to be available by September for the Christmas buying season, and I'll bet that Olympus feel this urgency as well. My guess is that, as usual, they are just keeping things quiet until the product is ready. The rumor mill will keep grinding along, but who knows where the mill gets its raw material.

Oh, and John, I predict that Olympus will skip the E-6 and go straight to the E-7 after the E-5. It will be available within this century.

Re: E-3 Successor

Or they maybe repackage the E-3 with a X or S tag ( Available immediately ) to boost the current sales, then the actual launch of a totally new E-5 announce in September in time for the Fotokini and available only in 2011.

Why is that? Are you jumping ship soon?
