Olympus E-System lens and accessory hire

Some of you may be aware that we have been working on setting up an equipment hire service aimed at Olympus E-System users in the UK. Well, it's almost up and running. The service will be operated from our UK site, www.e-group.uk.net, and I have just posted this information there:

At last I can now reveal our pricing for our forthcoming Olympus E-System lens and accessory hire service. I say 'forthcoming' but the fact is that we have one customer already, whose 7-14 is on its way to him as we speak!

A provisional price list, which include summaries of other aspects of the service can be downloaded from here (pdf format):

    http://e-group.uk.net/files/e-group_hire_details1.pdf

The list is not complete - camera bodies are not listed and some accessories may be missing. But the bulk of what we will be offering is there.

I believe that the rates are substantially cheaper than a Nikon or Canon user would have to pay for hiring the same value of gear from other independent hire services.

AND, we are in the final stages of working out rates for a rebate scheme through which you can claim money back on your hire if you purchase the same model of item hired within four weeks of hiring it. More details on this will be published soon.

If you have any questions - please don't hesitate!

I would guess that a possible question here is - can we offer the service to people outside of the UK. The only answer I can give at this stage is, possibly. Priority must be given to UK customers as the service is being driven and supported by Olympus UK. But if you are interested and you don't live in the UK, it's still worth getting in touch.

    Some perverse logic here.....

Just worked out that by owning the equipment I do I am saving 488 every three days....now that can't be bad. In fact with that type of saving I am sure I could afford a 300mm lens in no time.....!

Re: Olympus E-System lens and accessory hire

The service serves two purposes: to enable you to try before you buy (and get a rebate of some of your hire fee if you do buy), and to be able to sample the benefits of equipment you will probably never be able to buy outright. But of course, the ideal situation is to be able to own your own gear

I think that says it all - we'd all like the answer to be 'free' with 'a box of chocolates thrown in' - but, given reality, the prices look very competitive.

If I had a specific task to do, or even if it was to just have a play, chucking away 50 every now and again isn't the end of the world. I wish you every success, I think the key thing now is to market it well. Perhaps Olympus UK will help promote it on their own website. I'm sure retailers, with the sniff of a potential sale, would only be too happy to point customers in your direction.

Put it the other way round, the list tells you how much money you are wasting each day you are not taking a good photo with your kit.

Take Ian's prices a 7-14 new is 1345 while it is 46 to rent for a week. So everyone who owns one has to show more than 29 awe inspiring photos taken with it, each worth 46 to them, before they can honestly claim they saved a single penny

That is the economy of owning stuff - it rarely makes economic sense to buy I am afraid, which is why rental places (e.g. cars, lenses, etc) thrive.
    enjoy

I disagree - owning is good because you can just pick your camera and lens up and take pictures any time you like. Later on, you can sell your lens and get back a larg proportion of what you paid for it.

This sounds great! What a great initiative, I'll volunteer to set up the Australian branch if Olympus OZ foots the bill.
