Agreed - most welcome - this ties in with recent comments about making sure all of the lens line-up will be imager-AF compatible.

Is there any technical reason why a lens wouldn't be able to use imager-AF? I assume the firmware update is about getting the correct set of parameters for a given lens to the body so that imager AF can work reliably (hence it isn't just a case of turning on a switch saying 'enable imager AF'!).

When the 70-300 was being designed, Olympus was already working on Imager AF, so it seems logical that the lens was equipped to work in this mode, but for some reason the fine tuning has only now been realised throught the firmware update.

The problem with earlier lenses and SWD lenses is that the gearing of the AF system was optimised for very fast and loong range changes in focus setting. This is how traditional phase detect AF works. When used with imager AF the focus mechanism can only move relatively slowly. If Olympus can make the AF optimisation of all their lenses switchable between Imager AF and Phase detect AF, that would be really cool!

That will be useful, it's enough to make me consider selling my 50-200mm and buying a 70-300mm as I would like autofocus on a long lens. I'll wait till I hear reports of it being used on a Panasonic G1 successfully though.

It was sort of confusing with the 14-54 mk II being able to iAF leading to me mistakenly believing that round aperture blades had something to do with it. Obviously wrong as all lens apertures are round when fully open! But it does make me wonder whether there was more changed in the mk II lens (possibly AF gearing) than was obvious, given a f/w update for the 14-54 hasn't been the first one released.

Over at the Oly UK E-System User Group a number of 70-300 users have reported improved AF performance after updating the firmware. Has anyone else here experienced this?

Re: Live view AF firmware upgrade for ZD 70-300

I have recently purchased an E510 twin lens kit from Fleabay and bought a new 70-300 to go with it. I can confirm that the 70-300 autofocus seems improved after the update, particularly in low light and tricky situations. Seems slightly quicker with less hunting.

    Cheers

    I'll trade ya

Haven't updated mine yet, but I'll post comments when I do. To be honest I'm really not sure when I would use imager AF on the 70-300, except macro work I guess. I've done some low to the ground shots with the 14-42 on imager AF in Live View and it does operate much faster than doing the hybrid AF with other lenses.
