Exclamation If you think there will be a new OM-D E-M1 announced next week...

It's no secret that Olympus has what is being billed as an important launch event next week at Photokina and I will be there.

The rumour is that it will be the OM-D E-M1 Mk ii. This time three years ago I had already had several weeks of hands-on knowledge of the E-M1 having been to Japan to meet the designer and the engineers at Olympus. This year Olympus hasn't even issued an embargoed press release so I know as much as you do.

Never mind, I will do my best to get the salient information to you as fast as I can. So, here is the plan: I will prepare an article with a list of proposed features that people are expecting the new camera to have. During the event I will tick (or cross) each listed feature item and post the list online as soon as it's completed. I will follow up later with a more descriptive article.

The question is, what features should I list?! Most answers will be yes or no but some will be a number.

Here are a few of my own suggestions:

    Dual card slots
    Support for UHS-II cards
    Integrated GPS
    4K video support
    4K stills support
    20 megapixel sensor
Increased number of phase detect AF points
    How many PD AF points?
Inclusion of cross-type phase detect AF points
    How many cross-type AF points?
Absence of conventional mechanical focal plane shutter
    USB 3.0 data port
    DisplayPort port
    Bluetooth support
    NFC support
    Side-hinged articulating display
Enhanced multi-touch user interface (with pinch to zoom, etc.)
Custom settings that can be named
Custom settings that can be exported/imported

The list should concentrate on new features. So what would you propose be added to this list?

When I was in Japan three years ago I did talk at length about my personal ambition to see a camera with a much more modular design, with a central lens mount/sensor unit that could be mixed and matched with a variety of grips, displays and viewfinders. I can only dream that some if this may have been taken onboard!

    Over to you!

There have been some rumors about an Olympus developed 16 megapixel 3D stacked sensor.

I some how doubt that something like that, revolutionary and unproven, would be in a flagship product.

    But who knows?!

A few that I would be interested in (and/or have read rumors about):

    Global Shutter

    Hand-held high resolution mode

Improved AF with FT lenses (especially SWD)--this may be somewhat covered by the questions about Phase-detect AF points, but any details about the sensor architecture that enables better AF, or real-world testing speeds would be greatly appreciated.

    Tilt/Shift by moving the sensor

    New menu system

    Increased battery life

Battery grip with two batteries to stopping having to remove grip to change second battery. Dedicated IS button.
    Purchase incentive (free grip etc?)
Possible long warranty with possibility to purchase a longer transferable one.
    Toggled backlit buttons
Availability of using 4/3 lenses with hood results, as above.
    All for now.

A new, higher-resolution, higher-refresh rate EVF? What technology will it use (LCD, OLED, etc.)? Oooh, and how about one that can be seen when wearing polarized sunglasses?

I have only recently started wearing polarised prescription tinted glasses and I am a bit confused about the EVF as the polarisation orientation is 90 degrees off through the EVF but find looking at the rear screen as long as the camera is horizontal. Why would the polarisation orientation not be the same?

PS, EVF using any sunglasses is not recommended anyway so I am not that bothered, just confused!

I have noted the same confusing characteristic! I often wear polarized (prescription) sunglasses when photographing outdoors. It makes for a difficult, inconvenient choice between my eyes' comfort in the sun and getting a good view of my viewfinder.

    A useful
1....external power supply socket in the body itself rather than having to connect via the battery-grip..
2..and very useful to have a USB based charging setup .(perhaps the new USB 3.1 standard)..which is good for data transfer/power supply.

where camera tech is concerned, i can expect them to give every-aspect a bump in the technology development.

And meanwhile have a wonderful time at the event.
