    E-5 (or E-3) Shutter Life

The shutter on my E-5 jammed at the weekend and is now winging its way to Olympus to be fixed. This is just one of those things and can't be helped, but with the amount of advertising/emphasis on a 150,000 shutter life (mine only lasted 11,600) for the E-3 and E-5 I wondered how many of you had experienced such a failure?

Mines on 23000(E5) and still working after three years. Probably worth a mention to Oly.
    All the best

    Hi Iain -

My E-5 has taken a third more than AndyM's and still going strong.

I've heard of others - no toggers - but those with 'hi-end made in China' products who have had/having serious QA issues. One case, which stands out, is where the company ditched China and moved their business to the UK. Yes, it was more expensive to manufacture the items but it proved much cheaper as the 50% faulty goods were no longer in the business equation.

Might be interesting for all concerned to see if there is a common factor such as manufacture date etc.

I feel there is no need to do that.

Olympus on the whole have produced some pretty good stuff and I'm sure quality control has kept many problems away, that's why I'm an Olympusholic.

Pleased to see it was not tog related.

From memory my E-3 was around 40K when I bought it, and still going strong a year later. I do remember reading an analysis of reported E system shutter failures, but can't recall the website.

@ Barr1e - My remark was made not to slight Olympus but due to the fact that in the last six months or so various problems have arisen. On the sister µ4/3 forum there seems to be more than one user with problems of which Tordan is an example.

I can't see anything at all to suggest that 'made in XXX' has any relevance at all

fwiw the only Oly product that has blipped on me was Made in Japan - so what?

The country of manufacture is irrelevant - the company putting their name to a product is everything.

Put another way China, Tawain, etc etc build to the QA of the company specifing the build.

    Hi Wally -

My reply was made in the friendliest of terms.

I have not heard of the site you mention, I only hang out here and www.dpnow.com and on the odd occasion dpreview + ephotozine.

Re: E-5 (or E-3) Shutter Life

Given my made in Japan OM4 had three or four shutters in it before I gave up and threw it across the car park outside my repairers I don't think country of origin is relevant.

My E-3 has under 3000 shots on it. It's only used evening and weekends for personal work having work supplied cameras.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.
