Well, a lot of things have impressed me on the E system. I think that prominent among them is the fact that the E system is built ground-up, having digital in mind, and most of the other advantages of the 4/3 stem from there (i.e. small camera/lens size, x2 crop factor etc). It took a great deal of nerve from Oly to forsake the legace OM system, and I think the bet paid off.

I'm not sure that the end of the OM system was a gamble. Olympus simply decided not to follow its competitors into the autofocus DSLR era back in the mid-80s. Although the OM-4 was built in small numbers until just a few years ago, it was addressing a niche market only.

When I see the trouble that friends have to go through removing dust from their sensors or removing the specs after the fact, it just has to be the Supersonic Wave Dust Filter.

Olympus seem to come up with lots of innovations which then appear on Canon & Nikon. I bought into Olympus for Dust reduction. I have never had a dust spot to remove in 3 years. Everyon else used to say dust what dust. they now say live view is a gimmick, except on the Canon Eos 1Ds M111!!

Both the Canon EOS-400D and the EOS-1D Mark III have a sensor filter that is vibrated by a piezo-electric device to dislodge dust, but it works quite differently to the Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter and according the French technical test magazine, Chasseurs D'Images, the Olympus system performed much better. They apparently took test cameras and deliberately put dust on the sensor/filter and then examined how the cameras dealt with it.

As I understand it, the Olympus system was clearly the most effective.

Again, as I understand it, the key difference is that the Olympys Supersonic Wave system forms a high frequency wave in the filter, comparable to shaking the edge of a bedsheet or tablecloth - the dust is flung off by the wave that travels through the material. Other systems just shake the sensor or filter, which is much less effective.

I think that having designed the whole digital system from the ground is the greatest advantage, that allows to build up innovation and excellence, as is Olympus standard... I wait anxiously the E1 succesor...
The cameras and lenses are tremendous..

That's a good analogy...I was at the Henry's show in Toronto, and the Oly rep there showed me a demo with a modified E-1 (had the shutter and mirrors removed)...with no lens and the camera on its back, he poured in some plastic beads slightly larger than a "," comma) into the camera, and then turned on the camera...you could see the beads dance and even jump out of the camera...that's how intense the SSWF is, and why it works!

Having moved up from a bridge camera to DSLR it's got to be the live view sorely missing on my E500.
