I'm guessing he felt the need for a small aperture, maybe to compensate for focus issues, and a reasonably fast shutter speed to counter shake.

Initial side by side comparison of the m.Zuiko 75-300 and Pansonic 100-300

I used my EPL-1 to take night photos in Yosemite.

Here's a full moon, 20s exposure of north dome over merced river seen from sentinel beach. ISO800 f3.5 manual focus, using a flimsy 5ft/1lb targus...
