Photokina 2008 - hands-on with the new Four Thirds Sigma 50mm f/1.4

Sigma's Four Thirds lens range steadily grows with the addition of a 50mm f/1.4 fast prime

Sigma had several Four Thirds lenses and E-3 bodies on hand for demonstration purposes

We stopped by the Sigma booth this morning to get a hands-on feel for the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM. This is a premium category 'EX' Sigma optic and meets the call for more fast prime lenses for the steadily growing Four Thirds lens range.

Being equivalent to a 100mm f/1.4, this new lens from Sigma should earn a reputation as a very special portrait lens. f/1.4 is a whole stop brighter than the Zuiko Digital 50mm f/2 Macro, and should exhibit even better defocussed effect qualities, or 'bokeh'. HSM autofocus is fast and quiet, too.

Equating to a 100 f/1.4, the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM promises to be a superb portrait lens.

The lens is reasonably large, but feels solid and well proportioned when used on an E-3 body. The view through the E-3's viewfinder is even brighter than usual thanks to the brightness of this lens.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM certainly feels very much at home on an E-3
