Initial E-420 and DZ 25mm pancake samples

E-420-with-25mm f/2.8 pancake lens samples to download

Update - I've now added a second set of samples benefitting from better weather and light.

Alas, good weather did not coincide with the arrival of our Olympus E-420 plus Digital Zuiko 25mm f/2.8 'pancake' lens. The image samples below were taken under cloudy, cold and blustery conditions. All were taken with the E-420 noise filter set to Standard mode.

These samples are primarily to demonstrate the 25mm f/2.8 lens, but will be useful in evaluating the E-420 itself. A separate article with ISO range samples is being prepared, so watch this space.

We have included un-edited camera JPEGs (Large Fine quality, which is similar to what used to be called SHQ or Super High Quality) as well as the RAW versions of each image. At the time of writing only Olympus Studio 2.1.2 or Olympus Master 2.0.5 are capable of developing E-420 RAW files.

The images are provided for personal evaluation only. No re-publication (apart from on The Four Thirds User forum) or commercial use of these images is permitted without our specific permission. Click on the thumbnail image to view or download the camera JPEG image or the link indicated as 'RAW' to download the matching RAW file - and don't forget the additional set of samples on page 2:

P3207803 - Spot metering was used ensure the highlight cat's ear wasn't over-exposed by the harsh lighting from an adjacent window. 1/80th, f/4.0, ISO 400.
P3207807 - A filthy sign exalting you to clean up after one's dog. Shot at f/4.0 close to the sign in order to blur the background. Live view was used as the sign was high up. 1/400th, f/4.0, ISO 100.
P3207814 - A pretty stream spoiled by discarded items. f/5.6 is pretty much the resolution sweet spot for 10MP Four Thirds cameras. 1/160th, f/5.6, ISO 100.
P3207820 - Tree stump, a subject with a lot of fine detail. 1/100th, f/5.6, ISO 100.
P3207822 - Antiques shop front - with the wind buffeting both photographer and shop sign, 1/125th, f/4, ISO 100.
P3207828 - Winter pansies - another shot wide open to explore the low depth of field potential. 1/500th, f/2.8, ISO 100.
P3207830 - Daffodils - shot at f/3.5; another low depth of field composition. 1/160th, f/3.5, ISO 100.
P3207853 - These winter blossoms were being blown around, so I chose ISO 400 to bring up the shutter speed to 1/400th. Aperture was f/4.0, but the background remains very blurred. 1/400th, f/4.0.ISO 400.
